Grief Groups & Workshops in the Hudson Valley
Some things are easier to carry together.
Grief can be incredibly isolating, even when you're surrounded by people who love you.
There is something different that happens when you're in a room with people who understand an experience from the inside. You don't have to explain why a milestone feels complicated, why grief has resurfaced years later, or why you're feeling something you think you're not supposed to feel.
At Hudson Valley Holistic Therapy, our grief groups and workshops offer space for connection, reflection, and honest conversation about loss and the ways it continues to shape our lives.
Grief groups are offered in the Hudson Valley and virtually for participants throughout New York.
Why grief groups?
Individual therapy gives you a private space to explore the particular details of your grief — your relationship with the person who died, your emotions, your history, and how the loss is affecting your life.
Group work offers something different.
It offers the experience of being witnessed by people who understand.
Sometimes someone else says something you've felt but haven't known how to put into words. Sometimes you realize that the reaction you've been questioning in yourself is something other people experience too.
There can be relief in not having to explain the basics.
You can simply begin where you are.
Parent Loss Groups
Losing a parent can change your sense of family, identity, history, and belonging.
It can also be particularly isolating when parent loss happens earlier than it does for many of the people around you.
Friends may care deeply but not fully understand what it means to move through adulthood without a parent — navigating relationships, careers, family changes, milestones, or becoming a parent yourself without the person you expected to be there.
Our parent loss groups bring together adults navigating these experiences and offer space to talk about the parts of grief that can be difficult to find room for elsewhere.

Mother Loss Groups
The death of a mother can affect much more than the relationship itself.
It can shift your understanding of home, family, identity, caregiving, and the person you once turned to for comfort, information, or connection.
For women navigating motherhood without their own mother, the loss can take on additional layers.
Pregnancy, birth, parenting decisions, birthdays, holidays, and ordinary moments with your children can bring grief into the room unexpectedly. Joy and longing can exist side by side.
Our mother loss groups create space for women to talk openly about these experiences with others who understand the particular complexity of living — and sometimes mothering — without a mother.

What happens in a grief group?
You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to say.
Groups are facilitated by a licensed therapist and offer a combination of guided conversation, reflection, psychoeducation, and opportunities to connect with other participants.
Depending on the group, we may explore topics such as:
How grief changes over time
Secondary losses
Family and relationship changes
Anger, guilt, relief, and other complicated emotions
Anniversaries, holidays, and milestones
Grief and the body
Continuing bonds with the person who died
Parenthood after parent loss
Making space for life alongside grief
There is no expectation that everyone grieves in the same way.
The goal isn't to move through a prescribed set of stages. It's to have somewhere your grief can be spoken about honestly.
Workshops & Gatherings
Throughout the year, Hudson Valley Holistic Therapy offers workshops and gatherings exploring grief, relationships, identity, mindfulness, and life transitions.
These offerings may include guided reflection, conversation, experiential practices, education, or ritual.
Current and upcoming workshops will be shared here as they become available.
You don't have to carry it alone.
Grief is personal, but it doesn't always have to be private.
Being with people who understand won't take the loss away. But it can make the experience feel a little less lonely.
-
Individual therapy focuses closely on your particular experiences, relationships, history, and needs. A grief group adds the experience of being with others who have experienced a similar loss. Some people choose one or the other, while others find individual and group therapy meaningful in different ways.
-
You won't be pressured to share something you're not ready to talk about. Listening and being present with other people's experiences can also be an important part of participating in a group.
-
There isn't one correct time. Some people seek community relatively soon after a loss, while others join a group months or years later. What matters more is whether the group feels like the kind of support you're looking for right now.
-
Yes. Parent loss can continue to change as your own life changes. Milestones, relationships, parenthood, family changes, and new stages of adulthood can bring different parts of the loss forward, even many years later.
-
You are welcome. Grief doesn't require an uncomplicated relationship. Love, anger, relief, longing, resentment, sadness, and regret can exist together. Our groups make room for the complexity of the relationship as well as the loss.

Offerings vary. Some groups and workshops may be held virtually, while others take place in person in the Hudson Valley. Current listings will include the location and format for each group.
